Council to launch pilot traffic order to clamp down on illegal parking
The council has acted after complaints from traders and members of the public who have complained about the level of ‘intrusion’ from traffic in the pedestrianised zone in Bridge Street.
On one weekday in December 2009, 40 legal vehicles and 90 illegal vehicles were recorded in the pedestrianised zone.

It will also prevent all blue badge and special access permit holders from parking on all pedestrianised sections of Bridge Street and Bridge Place.
The order also bans vehicles over 36’ feet long from entering Bridge Place and Bridge Street (Bridge Place to Ryton Street section) due to damage to pavements, road signs and other street furniture such as seating and lamp columns.
