Hide AdHarworth youngster Brierley left ex-Marine Barnett stunned and frustrated, and in round two knocked him to the floor with a single right hook.
Although Barnett beat the count and bravely continued, the momentum stayed with Brierley, much to the delight of Manton coach Steve Ellis.
He told the Guardian: “Matt has put in so much effort for this fight, with his training and sparring, travelling to other clubs like Huthwaite to get extra experience.”
“He richly deserves the Midlands Championship.”
Brierley, who is back in action on 20th November at Scunthorpe in the ABA National quarter-finals, expressed his gratitude to those who had supported him in his preparation for the bout.
“I want to thank all the training staff at Manton ABC for their help, in particular my trainer, friend and mentor Harry Watson for all his motivation.”
